An Inside Look at Carrozzeria Touring's 'Superleggera' Coachbuilding Method on Tipo 3 & 4 Coupés

For those of us who've never seen a "naked" Touring body structure and wondered how Touring married their patented Superleggera construction method with unibody or monocoque construction, the photos below may be illustrative.

Many thanks to Conrad Stevenson for supplying these photos of his Tipo 3, *01749*, during its restoration. The Tipo 4 photos at the bottom of the page are from the internet.

Please note that I'm not an expert on 1900s, so any opinions expressed are strictly my own.

A "skinless" *01749* before restoration of the tub.

Most of the Superleggera "spaghetti tubing" is used to support the roof of the aluminum bodywork.

A close-up of the tub's firewall.

Not much  "spaghetti tubing" is evident in the front clip.

Now we're starting to get a good look at the "spaghetti tubing" structure.

Support for the roof and trunk aluminum body panels is clearly seen in this view.

A little better view of the rear structure.

The photos below, from the internet, provide views of the Superleggera structure underpinning a Tipo 4 1900CSS. Different cars are illustrated, and some of the photos appear to be archive photos from either Alfa Romeo or Carrozzeria Touring. The very last two photos are also a part of the feature Retrimming a 1900CSS.
